Dependency Trap #3
Can You Change Web Designers Without Losing Your Website?
Most business owners don’t expect to change web designers. Until they need to.
Most business owners don’t expect to change web designers.
When a relationship is working well, there is usually no reason to.
The website gets updated. Questions get answered. Everything ticks along nicely.
But businesses change. Sometimes your needs change. Sometimes your supplier changes direction. Sometimes you simply feel it’s time for a fresh perspective.
That raises an important question:
Could you change web designers without losing your website?
It Sounds Like A Strange Question.
After all, if you’ve paid for a website, surely you can take it with you.
The answer depends on how your website has been built and managed.
Some websites are easy to transfer. Others are much harder.
In some cases, changing providers means starting again from scratch. That can come as an unpleasant surprise.
Ownership And Access Matter
Changing web designers should feel similar to changing accountants.
The process may take some planning. There may be information to transfer. There may be a handover period. But the business should remain yours.
The same principle applies to websites. A healthy website setup should allow you to:
- Access your content
- Access your domain
- Access your hosting
- Move providers if needed
You may never need to. The important thing is that you can.
Why Transfers Become Difficult
Over the years I’ve seen situations where:
- The business owner doesn’t have login details
- The domain is registered in someone else’s name
- The website sits on a platform that doesn’t transfer easily
- Nobody knows where important information is stored
Usually this wasn’t intentional. It simply developed over time.
Everything worked until somebody wanted to make a change.
Good Relationships Don’t Need Locks
The best suppliers keep clients because they deliver value. Not because it’s difficult to leave.
A website relationship should be based on trust.
If you stay because you’re happy, that’s healthy. If you stay because moving feels impossible, that’s worth thinking about.
Freedom Creates Confidence
Ironically, businesses often feel more comfortable working with a supplier when they know they have options.
They don’t feel trapped. They don’t feel dependent. They know where they stand.
That creates confidence on both sides.
A Simple Question
If you decided to work with somebody new next month:
Would your website be able to come with you?
If you’re not sure, it may be worth finding out before you need the answer.
